The Spanish minor for the professions enhances the students major by equipping them with language skills and cultural knowledge for professional purposes. In addition to grammar, composition, and conversation, students can take Spanish for Business or Spanish for the Health Professions and choose their own mix of third-year courses.

As a Spanish-speaking professional who can clearly communicate with colleagues, clients, or patients, they broaden their career opportunities in an increasingly global world.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

A 2.00 GPA in minor requirements.
At least nine hours of the program requirements must be completed at Truman State University or through a Truman State University led program, unless a greater number of credits at Truman are specified by the Spanish discipline.
The “Spanish Minor for the Professions: Health or Business” consists of five courses beyond the Intermediate II level and the successful completion of 15 credits.
Only one Spanish minor can be pursued.
Students earning a Spanish Minor for the Professions may not also earn a Modern Languages: Spanish major.
No grade of ‘D’ is accepted toward the Spanish Minor for the Professions.

SPAN 360 - US Latino Culture in Historical Context Credit(s): 3
SPAN 363 - Latin American Civilization Credit(s): 3
SPAN 364 - Spanish Phonetics and Phonology Credit(s): 3
SPAN 366 - Spanish for Business Credit(s): 3 OR SPAN 367 - Spanish for the Medical Professions Credits: 3 (If not used for the required area.)
SPAN 398 - Spanish Practicum for the Professions Credit(s): 1 to 6
SPAN 400 - Introduction to Spanish Sociolinguistics Credit(s): 3

Notes:

Practicum course work must be approved by the Spanish faculty prior to enrollment.
Some of the above requirements may be satisfied by Study Abroad courses. It is required that all Spanish minors planning to study abroad seek the advice of a Spanish faculty member before going out of the country. A Spanish Study Abroad Course Equivalency Request Form, available on the CML website, must also be completed and approved to facilitate course transfer. Failure to do so may result in some credits not being awarded for experience abroad.
Native Spanish speakers with sufficient prior college-level preparation may enroll in any upper-level course with the permission of the instructor.
